Brostowicz Family

Wąż Coat of Arms

History

The surname Brostowicz has been traced back to Western Prussia / Eastern Poland. The family first arrived in the US during the 2nd half of the 19th century. There are several variations of the spelling, the modern, common spelling is the same as the domain for this site, 'Brostowicz' with alternate spellings being 'Brzostowicz' and 'Brostowitz'. The family has a large presence in both Wisconsin and Pennsylvania states of the US, but with time has scattered the family enough to encompass most of the continental US.

Historically, there isn't much information available prior to the family arriving in the US around 1872, there is a Wikipedia article which mentions Brzostowicz family used the Wąż coat of arms in Poland. There is also a small reference to a massacre in the onset of WWII that occurred in a small town in now-Belarus that was then called, Brzostowica Mała; from the description of the event, it seems unlikely that local records will have been maintained as far back as 1872, so the trail most likely ends there.
